Szárítóterem tájban / Drying Room in Landscape, 2016
1956: invading corps of the Soviet army fighting desperately the resisting groups of insurgents shot heavily the houses in Üllői út and many buildings had to be pulled down.
1958: the present block of flats were built on these vacant sites, even sculptures were placed next to some gates to praise the consolidation of the new power.
Each new apartment house was equipped with a common laundry and drying room. Subjects of the state brought their laundry here in turns day after day, washing, lyeing, hanging out their stuff, their dreams, later their future as well. The unfriendly, overtly authoritative room originally constructed according to functionalist ideals slowly became filled with these dreams, the muted bellows and sighs of the crushed revolution, the desires that never broke out or became worded, with the tunes of “Pancsoló Kislány” (‘Splashing Little Girl’). Finally the sea itself moved in into its area, its walls, windows and pipes.
This 58-year-old room resembling a Byzantine icon with the flows of its stillness, the changes of its spiritual refractions is still singing those sea-borne vibrations day and night.
Let this paper iconostasis stand for the memory of the unripe and unlived 1956.
