Fred Schepisi’s feature film debut is a semi-autobiographical account of 13 year-old Tom Allen’s time at a Catholic boarding school in Melbourne. The seclusion and the rigidity of religious life create tension and sexual frustration among students and Brothers alike. The film shows how each person faces their frustration, doubt and even the dissatisfaction with religious life.

The film won the 1976 Australian Film Institute Award for Best Film, Best Direction, Best Lead Actor (Simon Burke and Nick Tate), Best Screenplay, Best Achievement in Cinematography, and the Jury Prize.

The Devil’s Playground inspired a sequel in the form of a 6-episode TV series called Devil’s Playground. It was aired on the Australian premium cable and satellite television channel Showcase from 9 September until 8 October in 2014. The series is set in 1988 and has Simon Burke reprising his role as Tom Allen (Burke was among the executive producers as well). The cast includes Jack Thompson, Toni Collette and John Noble, among others.
