A 2009-ben indult projekt a dobok és a vintage szintetizátor zenei akció-reakció játékából született. A sakk legendáktól kölcsönzött név tartalmilag is passzol: a csapat sakk-performansza 2012 őszén volt látható a Müsziben. A Karpov not Kasparov munkája az élőzenét kísérleti színházi akcióval elegyíti, sokszor játszanak szokatlan helyszíneken, például borbélyüzletben, könyvtárban, öregek otthonában, éttermi konyhán vagy cipőboltban. 2011 őszén a LocalRecords adta ki a Soundtrack for a Game of Chess c. EP-t, amit a Radio Romania Cultural és a Radio Europa Libera az év legizgalmasabb zenei munkái közé sorolt és a Vice Magazine-tól megkapta a hónap albuma címet, zenéjük a WMFU New York-i válogatásába is bekerült. 2012-es turnéjuk után tavaly megjelent második albumuk is.
A Karpov not Kasparov zenéjét leginkább a jazzy-oriental-electroclash határozza meg, valahol az Air és John Zorn között. Ezúttal egy némafilmre zenélnek élőben, de a koncert után tolnak egy kis talpalávalót is – elvégre péntek este van!

Karpov not Kasparov is a musical game of chess between synthesizers and drums. Sometimes, contemporary-dance performers or volunteers join the musicians for an experimental live show of theatrical act performed on the spot with a real-time soundtrack. Many of these shows were hosted in rather unconventional locations like a barber shop, an old people’s house, a shoe store or a restaurant toilet. In autumn 2011 the disc label LocalRecords released the first studio material signed by Karpov not Kasparov, delivering a rather intelectual but very danceable music. The EP was called ‘Soundtrack for a Game of Chess” and was soon considered among the best musical works of the year by Romanian Cultural Radio and by Radio Free Europe. The work was also declared ‘the album of the month’ by Vice Magazine and included in WMFU New York playlist. In spring 2012 the project resurrected on the local scenes in a succession of live shows followed by an autumn tour in Europe with gigs in Budapest, Vienna and Berlin. The winter of 2013 brought the second studio EP. The band is now currently touring Central Europe on the route Brasov, Cluj, Kosice, Krakow, Warsaw, Poznan, Berlin, Prague,Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, Belgrade.
The Karpov not Kasparov sound is best described as jazzy-oriental-electroclash, somewhere between Air and John Zorn.
